About me

Averill BuchananInitially I trained as a graphic designer and illustrator, and for several years I ran my own design consultancy. When I found myself editing other people’s copy, I decided it was time to follow my passion – words, literature and books – and returned to university as a mature student. Ten years later I emerged with a degree, an MA and a PhD in English Literature. I have been working as a freelance editor and proofreader since 2004.

My book, Mary Blachford Tighe: The Irish Psyche (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2011), is available on Amazon UK (Amazon US).

Professional Affiliations:
I am an Advanced Professional Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP). I play an active part in the society: I am a tutor on the SfEP ‘Introduction to Fiction Editing’ online course and the co-ordinator of the Northern Ireland SfEP Local Group. In 2014, I was awarded the SfEP Judith Butcher Award for ‘raising the profile of the SfEP and the editorial profession, both in Northern Ireland and around the world’.

I am a Full Member (and currently Chair) of the Association of Freelance Editors, Proofreaders, Indexers (AFEPI Ireland), and the founder and member of the Editors’ and Proofreaders’ Alliance of Northern Ireland (EPANI).

I am also a Partner Member of the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) and a Charter Member of the Association of Independent Publishing Professionals (AIPP).
